Nyrond Gazetteer: Duchy of Flinthill

[ Gazetteer ]

Regions: Arndulanth, Tannis, Snake Pass, Mistwatch.

Officially covering the western Flinty Hills and the hilly part of the Gamboge, the Duchy of Flinthill is effectively little more than the land within bowshot of the mining and farming town of Arndulath. Far from the capital, Arndulath has long been nearly autonomous, having more in common with the woodsmen of the Gamboge or the gnomefolk of the Flinty Hills than with the distant rulers of Nyrond. It has been nearly a century since the last duke ruled here - the land has since been administered from Womtham or Midmeadow, bouncing between both regions like a shuttlecock every few decades. With the recent re-alignment of Nyrond, Lynwerd promoted Grevin Damar, a personal friend, as Duke of Flinthill, and sent him to the region's new capital to restore order to the land. Damar had a reputation for hard work and determination while serving in Archbold's court, and seemed perfectly fit for the role.

It is not an easy one. The gnomes of the nearby Flinty Hills may swear formal loyalty to Nyrond, but that does not mean they obey if they don't feel like it. The elves in the part of the Gamboge under his legal rule are even less willing to do other than what they feel like. The military forces in the Snake Pass and Mistwatch mostly follow their own direction. The Duke can only console himself that most of these are well disposed towards him and will sometimes do as he desires.

Besides the 2300+ humans in town, Flinthill contains at least 7000 gnomes, 1000 hill dwarves, a few hundred deep halflings, and an unknown number of human hillman. These are estimated at about 3000, but none of them want to face the increased taxes more accurate figures would imply. The gnomes mostly mine silver and gems. The dwarves mine silver, iron, and a little lead.

Arndulanth

Arndulath itself is at the corner of the Gamboge Forest and the Flinty Hills. And, while the new Duke has some problems administrating those within his territory, his problems within the town are much worse. The town swells with rural folk fleeing the goblin or orc raids, and the actions of the soldiers. In addition, the town houses a number of Tenhas who fled to northern Nyrond during wars. Most Nyrondese are hostile to these Tenhas, who they perceive as lazy, indolent, feckless people with an upleasantly arrogant nature. Also, when he arrived, the town was a stronghold of the Valorous League of Blindness, and the effective ruler was the Knight Valorous Carindrell, a very charismatic man who still has great power. Carindrell had riled up the town with speeches denouncing the wickedness of Womtham. Most Ardulants know well the attitude of Womtham from various trading visits, and one appearance by Duke Basmajenn prior to the restructuring. During this visit Arndulants were able to see exactly what a pompous fool Duke Basmajenn was. Carindrell claims that the Gamboge and Flinty Hills folk keep Nyrond afloat with their produce, and what do they get in return? Carindrells supporters cleaned up the streets of Arndulanth, ran Northern refugees out of town, and forced Tenhas into "civil" work, such as street cleaning, the worst laboring jobs and the like under condition of virtual slavery. Markets are watched by Valorous League members, who expose cheats and thieves.

Damar was able to check the League. He made the better sort, often strong backers of the League, see that Arndulath is too dependent on gnomes, obvious heretics to the League since they worship gnome gods instead of Pholtus, to allow the League to dominate the town and drive the gnomes and their valuable trade away. Since Arndulath had already lost gnome trade to other towns, this attack hit home. While he has not driven the League out of town, or even stop it from being a very powerful voice, he has kept it more in check, and town mayor no longer comes when Carindrell calls. The various Tenhas have been freed to take jobs as they wish, but must have jobs to remain. Members of the Valorous League effectively remain the police force for the town and keep the place very orderly.

Carindrell has been trying to solve his gnome problem, both by recruiting gnomes to the "true faith" and by trying to find wiggle room in church doctrine that will make the gnomes less than full heretics. He has had some luck in both regards, but both are very much uphill tasks. He has had much better luck in his demon hunting, and drags the body of some fiend into town at least once a year, a feat that greatly increases his popularity. His enemies whisper of some trickery or even evil pack, but there is no evidence he is more than extremely talented in this way.

Tannis

Shortly into the hills, nearer to Womtham than to Arndulanth, lies the small settlement of Tannis. Tannis was at one time a larger town, currently reduced and nearly destroyed by raids from evil humanoids. The only thing of interest near the town are the ruins of a very large temple of Rao to the north. This temple was pillaged and burned several years ago by marauding humanoids.

Snake Pass

Some of the best silver mines are on or near the Snake Pass, the reason for the name is obvious to any who have snaked back and forth along it. Snake Pass leads from Schukendale to the Mistwatch citidel.

Mistwatch

This dwarven designed and built fortress is near 2 major silver mines that employ over 800 gnomes. Besides being a refugee for them, commander Soughdriver uses it as a base for supporting the independent gnomes to the East.

The Mistwatch fortress is technically under the Dukes jurisdiction, but it lies deep in the Flinty Hills on the far side of the province and the best way to communicate is by the Snake Pass, which requires any message to go from Mistwatch to Schukendale to Womthan, where the Duke of Womthan is apt to put in his own orders and requests, before it finally reaches Arndulath. And the commander of Mistwatch, hill dwarf Flandeld Soughdriver, is a good friend of the Field-General of the Flinty Hills, General Osmeran, and usually acts as his partner, ignoring any orders from the Duke(s) that he deems unwise.
