The Nyrond people are strong willed and willing to fight to protect their lands and well-being. Military duty is a requirement to become a full citizen of Nyrond. DwarvesDwarves as a notable population in Nyrond are rather recent. There is no historical dwarvish homeland in Nyrond. There are a number of small Dwarvish clans who have fled from the Rakers Mountains in the North and have settled in Nyrond. Many have settled in the Flint Hills while other have moved to towns and cities to become tradesmen. Playing Dwarves: The Player needs to be prepared to answer the question why have you left your clan in a time of need and while their numbers are very small. Most humans who meet dwarves will treat them with some suspicion, which isn't helped by the normal dwarvish reserved and sullen behavior. ElvesThe elves have two main population areas. They are the Celadon and Gamboge Forests, and these elves are primarily sylvan elves. There are some High elves living in the forests, but many live in small communities throughout the Kingdom.Playing an Elf: In the Northern parts of the Kingdom the elves are valued and trusted allies of the Kingdom. They play a valued role in guarding the northern borders. There are many with Noble Titles. Southwest, in the Celadon forest, many of the elven communities are in conflict with the government over policies of logging and taxation. But as a whole elves are not uncommon in most regions, and are treated reasonably well. GnomesThe gnomes live primarily in the Flint Hills, where they have been miners for many generations. They hold an important role in the economy of the kingdom, since they are involved in mining much of the metal that is used for the Kingdom's currency.Playing Gnomes: for being a very small population group they are held in high regards by most people. Though most humans may never have met a gnome, they are not held in much suspicion. HalflingsThere are a number of halflings that have taken up residence in Nyrond. As one of the largest and most peaceful kingdoms in the region with one of the most open minded outlooks on little people, many halflings have been drawn to the kingdom. They currently make up nearly 6% of the population of Nyrond making them the second most common non humans and the third most populous group in general.Almost every large city in Nyrond has a halfling section where halflings and other humanoids of small stature tend to congregate and offer services that cater to people of their size and interests. Rel Mord, Oldred, Wragby, Womtham and Mithat are all famous for their neighborhoods of "little people". There are large numbers of deep halflings living in the Flinty Hills among the gnomes and dwarves of the region, and a large number of tallfellow halflings living among the elves and rangers of the Celedon Forest though few make their homes in the Gamboge. There are even a few small villages in the Flinty Hills that are almost entirely populated by halflings. By far the most interesting population of halflings are those living in the Anodan Hills West of Oldred and North of Wragby in the Duchy of Korenflass. The halfling society here is a bit unique, not only because the communities are nearly completely composed of halflings, but also because the composition and size of any one village seems to constantly change. Villages will often appear seemingly overnight and others may be abandoned just as quickly thus making a true census of the area nearly impossible. Villages normally consist of only a dozen or two simple low rock houses with sod roofs and a few small gardens and farms that are easy to overlook in the rough terrain. Most villages also have large herds of sheep and goats for food, milk, and wool but little is exported outside of the region except for wool. Halflings living here are usually "taking it easy" and living the "rural life" and may will have other homes in Rel Mord or Oldred, and they have a tendency to move away en mass whenever a good opportunity elsewhere in the kingdom comes up. Even halflings that have lived there for years will sometimes suddenly pack up and sell their home when a newcomer offering a good price comes along. Often entire clans will up and move away selling their homes to other halflings or clans in the area or simply abandoning them if there isn't a buyer. The Anodan Hills also serve as a communal gathering spot for many of the halflings of Nyrond, and during festivals thousands of halflings congregate in the Anodan Hills to socialize and mingle with other clans (many a halfling has met their mate at these festivals). Owing to the region that these villages are in, rumors abound about their involvement in the smuggling operations of the Duchy of Korenflass. Rumors of hidden caches of smuggled goods, midnight caravans of tiny wagons, illicit goods strapped to the bellies of a herd of sheep, and even smugglers dressed up as sheep are common but no solid connection has ever been found. Half-ElvesHalf-elves do not have particular area which they come from. They can be found a lot in elvish communities and can also be found in a lot of the larger cities and towns.Half-OrcsThere are no large tribes of Orcs living in Nyrond, though Nyrond's enemies used many as troops during the Wars. Half-orcs are the spawn of a human and an orc parent. Many of the half-orcs in the Kingdom were war children, or were members of mercenary groups.Playing Half-orcs: these folks have the hardest time in Nyrond. Even those who have chosen citizenship (any one who is playing a half-orc character in Nyrond is assumed to have done this) will have to understand they are an extremely small population percentage and will be looked at in fear and scorn. They are a reminder to people of the evil hordes that descended into the Kingdom. They also are a reminder of the slaughter and despair the wars created. If you chose to play a Half-orc be prepared to be shunned, cursed and looked down upon. HumansThe humans of Nyrond are primarily of Oeridian stock, descendants from the Oeridian Nyrdi. Oeridian humans are the primary race and holders of power in the Kingdom, although in 594CY King Lynwerd married Xenia Sallavarian, of the Sueloise Urnst noble house Sallavarian.Nyrdi Noble HousesThe lands east of the Nyr were held by civilized Flan and Ur-Flan alike, until the arrival of the Oeridian's. The Oeridians settling the area were known generally as the Nyrdi, and they had many small kingdoms warring with each other and rarely being unified, until the threat of the Aerdi Oeridian invasion. Of these kings, the strongest was Nehron, who managed to bring together the other Nyrdi Kings Bastrayne, Braeton, Huldane, Korenn and Orberend. Unfortunately, their unification was too late, and they were conquered at the Battle of a Fortnight's Length in -109 CY. The conquering Aerdi kings divided the Nyrdi lands, subjugating and assimilated the different Nyrdi houses into their own houses Rax and Cranden. Througout the Aerdi occupation the old houses were supressed, but after the mantle of the Great Kingdom was removed and Nyrond declared its independance in 356 CY, many of the nobility traced their ancestry and reclaimed their old house names. The Royal Family of Nyrond claims ancestry back to the old Nehron king who unified the Nyrdi (although Rax blood is as strong if not stronger than Nehron blood); and King Archbold remains as head of house Nehron. Many of the lords within Almor also claim lineage to the Nyrdi, but much of this has been replaced with Aerdi Cranden's, who ruled the area until they lost power to an Ecumenical Council. The current-day nobility of Almor are all families within the Aerdi Cranden house, and only a few can track their ancestry to the old Nyrdi kings. There are other minor houses of the lords within Nyrond, but generally speaking all of them claim ancestry into one of the major listed houses above. The current provincial lords of Nyrond:
Other Noble HousesHouse SallavarianHouse Sallavarian is one of the most ancient Suel houses in the Urnst States. The Sallavarians were not signers of the Maure compact, but were in attendance at the signing as witnesses.Today, House Sallavarian is a small house but has wealth and influence far beyond other houses its size. Unlike most of the Urnst houses, the Sallavarian house is strictly matriarchal. The current head of the house is Lady Xanthea Sallavarian. The Sallavarian women have always been talented in the Arcane Arts, and the current generations are not exceptions. Lady Xanthea is a talented wizard, and runs a small magical college in Nelix. She accepts only female students, and has helped train several accomplished wizards. Her youngest cousin, the Lady Jallazari, is one of the most powerful wizards in the Flaness, and is a member of the Circle of Eight. Lady Xanthea's daughter, Xenia is a very accomplished bard, and is reknown throughout the Duchy and in the Free City of Greyhawk as a musician and actress. In 594CY she married King Lynwerd, becoming Queen of Nyrond. The males of the Sallavarian family tend towards training in the military and woodland arts; in recent generations, many of them have received training at the Stalwart Pines Ranger School. Others sons take to the study of the arts and sciences, by attending colleges and universities throughout the Flaness. The house colors are red, green and gold, and the house crest consists of a green field with a Red and a Gold dragon holding aloft a stylized shield in with an "S" surrounded by a book, a musical instrument, and at the bottom of the shield, the date 4898 S.D.
