Deity Declaration and Favored Weapons

Question:

Dear Rules Lawyer:

Do clerics in LG have to declare a deity?  If no can they just pick their domains?  If yes if one were to pick the war domain would he or she be allowed the granted power of free martial weapon proficiency with deities favored weapon and weapon focus with the deities said favored weapon?

Signed,

Blessed One

Answer:

Dear Blessed One:

LGCS 4.2 (page 9) states:

"A cleric must serve a specific non-evil deity from the LIVING GREYHAWK Deities document (found on the campaign website).  PC clerics may not serve Wastri."  NOTE:   a new deities document is in the work and should be released soon.

SRD states:

"WAR DOMAIN - Granted Power: Free Martial Weapon Proficiency with deity’s favored weapon (if necessary) and Weapon Focus with the deity’s favored weapon."

So the answer would be Yes, you have to pick a Deity in LG and with the war domain you do get Martial Weapon Proficiency and Weapon Focus with the deities  preferred weapon.  NOTE: If two weapons are listed, either may be used as the favored weapon.

What about "god rolls" for cure spells?

Question:

Dear Rules Lawyer:

I've played quite a few games where the cleric has rolled a one on a d8 for a cure spell and asked the judge for a "god roll." The judge has allowed it, sometimes rolling it themselves and sometimes letting the cleric re-roll it.

At other tables, when the healer has asked for a re-roll, the judge has joked, "only if I get to re-roll any 8's you roll." But the intention was clear. Whatever rolled up on the cure die was final.

Which is the "right" way to handle this?

Signed,

Bleeding in Brotton

Answer:

Dear Bleeding,

Once again, we're talking about variant rules. Although the judge is being "nice" in allowing a "god roll" for any ones that appear on the d8's for a cure spell, this is not provided for in Living Greyhawk. Asking a judge for this minor "cheat" puts them on an ethical slope they don't
need to be negotiating.

Let the die fall where it will. If that cure moderate spell only rolls up a total of 2 plus the healer's level, so be it. The divinity invoked is either distracted, or has determined the healer (or the injured PC) is not going to get the big bonus this round.

The Rules Lawyer

PS - Personally, I have fallen into this trap with my Bard. It's so easy to be disappointed and beg for that reroll. Uh uh, ain't gonna do it no more no how. Sorry, fellas!

When does a character die in LG?

Question:

Dear Rules Lawyer:

At a recent convention, one of our characters was dropped from above zero hit points to below -10 hit points. The judge allowed a full "mercy round" for other characters to come to this PC's rescue and cure them above -10 hit points. Someone did enough healing during that round so that character survived.

At the same convention, a similar thing happened to another table playing the same module during the same encounter. That judge did NOT allow the character a "mercy round" and of course, the character died.

What gives? I understand that this is a variant rule, but I thought that's what playing in a Living campaign was supposed to eliminate. The core rules provide a level playing field for every character. Am I wrong?

Signed,

Confused

Answer:

Dear Confused:

A "mercy round" IS a variant rule and is not allowed in Living Greyhawk. The core rules state that a character dies at -10 hit points. The only "mercy round" any judge is allowed to give is the one from -9 to -10 hit points. At -9, the character has one more round to make a successful stabilization roll. During that time, any character can come to their aid and cast some miracle upon them and take them out of death's grasp. However, on the dying character's turn, if they fail that final stabilization roll, they lose one more hit point, and they die at -10. A character may only roll stabilization rolls with lethal damage of -1 to -9 hit points.

If a character is dropped in a single attack from a positive hit point balance to below -10, there is no opportunity to roll for stabilization because the character is already beyond the maximum of -9. In this case, the character dies immediately.

(See page 145 of the PHB for a clear discussion of how this works.)

Hope this clears things up!

Judges, please play by the rules. Variants like this are contrary to the spirit of Living Greyhawk which has established a "variant free" game. Every player deserves as level a playing field as we can give them.
